Matter of Time
Born in Madrid to a French mother and Spanish father, Maria has lived in Spain, France and most recently Dublin for the past four years. Having grown up enjoying the public social life of Spain, she is fascinated by the different ways social ecologies function in the daily life. It is in the little differences, habits, gestures and words that we reveal not only our sociocultural identities but also our ideologies.
Matter of Time is a multimedia, interdisciplinary project that aims to visualise locality. Inhabiting an increasingly globalised society, it can be very difficult to think at smaller scales. We witness the effects of this right the way from the overuse of social media to the gentrification of our neighbourhoods. Whilst many of these processes and tools offer significant opportunities it is also essential that we do not risk losing this sense of the locale. The importance of locality is more than a tokenistic nod to where we live, it is about constructing repeated, lived-in rituals and routines that hold together societies, from those who consider themselves to be global citizens to those who don’t
